CONCEPT
A young Indian woman goes up to the terrace at dusk to bring in the dry laundry before the wind takes it. Nothing happens. Her friend follows her up with the camcorder and films her the way friends actually film each other, badly and without a plan. She talks to the friend, never to a lens, never to an audience.
SUBJECT LOCK
Indian woman, early twenties, warm medium brown skin. Realistic skin with visible pores, faint under eye shadow, minimal makeup, slight shine on the forehead and nose in the low sun. Dark brown hair loosely tied back with strands pulling loose in the wind and sticking to her cheek. Oversized cream knit sweater with stretched cuffs, blue jeans, white sneakers scuffed at the toe, small canvas shoulder bag worn across the body. Same face, same hair, same outfit held identically for the full 30 seconds. Relaxed genuine personality, unposed posture, weight shifting on one hip when standing still.
SETTING
Open concrete terrace of an older three storey residential building, cool autumn evening around six. Low parapet wall with peeling paint, two sagging nylon clotheslines, wooden clips, a plastic bucket on its side, a black water tank, a dish antenna, dry leaves collected in one corner. Beyond the parapet, a dense low rise neighbourhood of flat roofs, tangled cables, water tanks and a few trees, hazy warm sun low on the horizon. Lived in and unstyled. No visible brands, no logos, no readable signage anywhere in frame.
CAMERA
Raw handheld MiniDV camcorder held by a friend who climbed the stairs behind her. Constant autofocus hunting, worst on flapping fabric and on the bright sky. Heavy exposure pumping when the lens swings from the dark stairwell to the lit terrace and again when it tilts toward the sun, sky blowing to white and clawing back. Awkward unmotivated zoom in and back out. Subject drifts off center and out of frame for a beat before the operator corrects. Mild tape noise, interlace combing on fast movement, one brief tape dropout glitch, slight vertical smear when the sun enters frame. Handheld micro shake, no stabilization, no gimbal, no cinematic choreography, no rack focus, no dolly language.
BEATS
0:00 to 0:05 Dark stairwell. Camera follows her up the last few steps, she pushes the metal door open and the frame blows out white before settling on the terrace.
0:05 to 0:12 At the line. She unpins clothes and drapes them over her forearm, clips going into her sweater pocket. Camera loses her behind a hanging sheet for two seconds, then finds her again.
0:12 to 0:18 A gust lifts one piece off the line and drops it near the parapet. She lunges late, misses, laughs, speaks the first line while chasing it. Autofocus hunts badly on the moving cloth.
0:18 to 0:26 Dead air. She stands holding the bundle against her chest, hair across her face, looking out over the rooftops. Nobody speaks for four full seconds. A crow lands on the parapet and leaves. Camera drifts, corrects, drifts again.
0:26 to 0:30 She turns toward the stairs, says the second line over her shoulder, laughs, and the camera swings down toward the concrete as the tape cuts.
DIALOGUE
Spoken language locked to Hindi. Only two lines in the entire clip.
